LESSONS FROM PREVIOUS REVIVALS
The Lord is shaking the earth, getting her ready for the greatest Holy Spirit outpouring the world has ever seen or experienced.
As God’s Holy Remnant, we must prepare ourselves for that which the Lord is hastening in our time. A great wave of Revival is coming, and we need to get ourselves ready. For those who are prepared will be the ones to usher in His Glory and Presence, walk in and release His Miraculous, and live as the first disciples and apostles did in the book of Acts. We will pioneer and forerun in the ‘New’ that He is establishing in the nations. Both in the Spirit and in the natural, church and market-place.
What hastens Revival?
A determined pursuit of God. A desire for more of His Spirit in our own lives and in our communities and nation, and a stubborn faith that will not let go until we encounter Him. God is calling us to hunger and thirst after Him and His Presence.
During the Welsh revival, Evan Roberts lived and taught these four principles:
1. Take care to do all that God says, and that only.
2. Take every matter, however insignificant, to God in prayer.
3. Obey the Holy Spirit.
4. Give all the glory to God alone.
God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours, which is why we need to obey even the seemingly insignificant promptings. (Is 55:8,9) Only the Spirit can beget Spirit. We need to lay down all our back-up plans of the flesh (every programme and back-up sermon), and step out, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, even at the risk of ourselves. We need to know when to speak and when not to, for it is essential that we let go of control and become flexible vessels in the Lord’s Hands.
In Wales, the children and the youth sought to equip the parents and train the adults in the ways of the Lord. Many well-known and respected international church leaders that visited the revival, sat quietly in their seats, knowing that God urged them to be hidden so that people’s attention wouldn’t be diverted onto them. Much wisdom and humility are required so that we do not become stumbling blocks or hindrances to the work of the Spirit.
Do not be discouraged if you wait on the Lord, whether alone, or in a group, and nothing seems to happen. The disciples needed patience and endurance, and so did those who were part of ushering in previous revivals. Many meetings were had where nothing happened. But then one day, the Holy Spirit came. When revival comes, don’t stop seeking God for more of His Spirit. Do not become content with a status quo even of the ‘new’. The Holy Spirit is forever moving and we need to be moving with Him.
As the Levitical Priests carried the Ark of the Covenant, the Presence of God, so we, as His revivalist of the ‘New’ will carry His Presence. It has to be carried with fear and trembling as we stand in His Holy Presence. Whenever the priests treated the Ark as holy, as they carried it into battle, great and miraculous victories were won. When they didn’t treat it as holy, they would lose the battle and the Ark, as it would be captured by the enemy.
The Lord is calling forth a people who walk and live in the Fear of the Lord. A people who will carry His Presence to the ends of the earth as His Royal Priesthood, opening up the way for Him to win every battle for us. Be warned that those who will build in the flesh to counterfeit that which is Spirit, will strive in the flesh and will have the Presence and Victory won by the Lord, removed from their midst.
Evan Roberts dreaded any form of adulation and repeatedly warned people that if they idolized him, God would remove His Glory from them. He understood the importance of standing in the Shadow of the Almighty, taking no glory for himself, and doing everything in his might to avoid pomp, attention, and adulation from world-famous reporters and people.
Living in a society of social media, where everything we do and achieve is posted and shared, has created an abnormal ‘normal’ of living our lives filled with adulation and praise. The Lord is calling us to His Normal, where we humble ourselves before Him, laying everything down, especially ourselves. For the biggest stumbling block in a revival is ‘self’.
One never has to promote the work of the Spirit. That which God builds, He establishes and promotes. There is no striving but complete trust, and a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light. No one can tear down that which God builds, and His work remains forever. (Ecc 3:14)
In this shaking, the Lord is humbling His People. He is calling us to seek Him more than we have ever sought Him. He is calling us to believe in Him with our whole hearts and to obey Him fully. For He is about to do a new thing, and He is looking for sons and daughters who will partner with His Spirit. For this ‘New Thing’ is all about His Spirit at work in and through us.
Revival is never an end in itself, but rather a means to a higher-end… the glory of God revealed and His Kingdom extended across the earth. The Lord is calling us to intimacy so we can be baptised with His Holy Spirit’s Fire afresh, igniting the world around us.
The Year of the LORD’s Favor
1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;a
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;b
2to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.c
4They shall build up the ancient ruins;
they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
